Upcoming Film: When Marnie Was There

Hiromasa Yonebayashi will be directing Studio Ghibli’s next film When Marnie  Was There which is based off of author Joan G. Robinson’s children book.


The story is about a lonely girl named Anna who lives with her foster parents.  She is a misfit with no friends until she meets a ghost named Marnie.  The film is expected to have a summer 2014 release in Japan. Information for an international release date of the film is still not known.

Yonebayashi has been a key animator on films such as Howls Moving Castle, Ponyo, Spirited Away, and From Up on Poppy Hill.  In 2010 he directed the successful box-office hit The Secret World of Arrietty.
